Self-drive or guided day tour?

Self-driving is affordable and flexible - you set the pace, stop where you like, and the entry is straightforward at Orpen. A guided day tour costs more but puts you in a raised open vehicle with a guide who knows where the cats are, reads the sightings radio, and handles the driving so you can watch. First-timers and photographers usually get more out of a guided day; returning self-drivers love the freedom of their own car.

Best time to visit

Dry season (May to October): the best months for wildlife viewing. Vegetation thins out and animals gather at waterholes, so sightings are easier. Mornings are cool. Peak season - book early.

Wet season (November to April): green season brings newborn animals, migratory birds and dramatic skies. Rates are lower and there are fewer tourists. The bush is lush, so animals are harder to spot, but the landscapes are spectacular.

Where to stay nearby

Hoedspruit sits in the middle of an unfenced corridor of private reserves - Timbavati, Klaserie, Umbabat, Balule, Thornybush - that share an open boundary with the Kruger. Lodges in these reserves give you Big Five game drives without entering the national park. Town and estate accommodation suit self-drive Kruger trips.
