"How much does a safari cost?" is the question we are asked most at the desk, and the honest answer is that it depends on where you sleep. The wildlife is the same in the Greater Kruger whether you pay R1,000 or R20,000 a night. What changes is the room, the food, how many vehicles are at a sighting and who drives. Here are real 2026 prices from published rates, checked on 5 October 2026, and three worked budgets.

How to make it cost less

  1. Come in the green season. Lodges price January to June lower: Kapama River Lodge's 2026 rates start at R14,000 from January to June against R15,000 from July, and Mohlabetsi offered R4,765 per person sharing from January to June 2026 on a three-night stay.
  2. Mix your nights. Two nights in a private lodge and the rest in Hoedspruit, with game drives and a Kruger day booked separately, gives you the lodge experience for less.
  3. Self-cater. A house in Hoedspruit or a Kruger rest camp bungalow costs a fraction of a lodge night. See our self-catering guide.
  4. Get a Wild Card if you will spend a week in national parks: R4,680 for an international individual, R7,310 for a couple (2025/26).

Is South Africa cheaper than Botswana, Tanzania or Kenya?

Usually, yes, for the Big 5. The Greater Kruger is reached by road or a short scheduled flight, and its lodges range from rest camps to the very top. Safaris in Botswana and in Tanzania's remote parks more often rely on light aircraft between camps, which adds to the cost. What you pay for there is remoteness; what you get here is choice.
