Best Time to Visit Kruger National Park - Season by Season

When to visit Kruger and the Greater Kruger: dry winter (May-Sep) for the Big Five, green summer (Nov-Mar) for birding and fewer crowds. Month-by-month guide.

The short answer

The best time for wildlife viewing in Kruger is the dry winter (May to October), when thin vegetation and concentrated waterholes make sightings easier. November to April is green season - lower rates, fewer crowds, and excellent birding with migrants arriving. September offers the best combination: dry, dramatic light, visible wildlife.

When to visit Kruger

Kruger is open every day of the year and there is no truly bad time to visit - only different trips. The two main seasons are very different experiences.

Dry winter (May to October) - the best for wildlife viewing

The dry winter months are peak Kruger. Vegetation thins, the bush opens up, and animals concentrate around the few remaining waterholes - so sightings are much easier. Mornings are cold (single digits possible on dawn drives, layer up) but afternoons are mild. July and August are coldest and driest; September starts to warm. Peak season - book early.

Green summer (November to April) - lush, quiet and cheaper

Summer brings rain, newborn animals, dramatic skies and the migratory birds. The bush is thick and animals are dispersed, so wildlife is harder to spot. But rates are lower, lodges are quieter and the scenery is at its best. Excellent for birders.
