The Big 5 are why most people come to the Greater Kruger, and the reserves around Hoedspruit are among the best places in Africa to see them. Here is what each one is, where it lives, how likely you are to see it, and how to plan for all five. Figures were checked on 5 October 2026.

What are the Big 5, and why that name?
Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The term comes from the hunting era, when these were the five animals most dangerous to hunt on foot. Today it is a viewing list, and the Greater Kruger is one of the few places where all five live together in the wild.
Where they live: the Greater Kruger
The Kruger National Park covers nearly two million hectares. On its western side, the Timbavati, Klaserie and Balule private reserves share open boundaries with the park, so animals move freely between them; Kapama and Thornybush are large Big 5 reserves of their own, close to Hoedspruit. You can see the Big 5 in the national park on a self-drive or a guided day, or from a lodge or a game drive in the private reserves.
The five, one by one
Lion
Often found resting in the shade by day, active at dawn, dusk and night. The central grasslands around Satara, about an hour from Orpen Gate, are classic lion country. Lions are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN; in the Kruger, the last park-wide survey (2005) counted about 1,800, and recent surveys in the north found lower numbers, with snaring and poisoning among the threats. Read where to see lions.
Leopard
Solitary, mostly nocturnal and the hardest of the five for most visitors. The private reserves, where guides can follow a leopard off road within the reserve's rules, give the best chances. Read where to see leopards.
Elephant
The easiest to see. The Greater Kruger holds a large and growing population, estimated at around 30,000 in 2024. Read our elephant guide, or meet the Jabulani herd up close on Elephant Moments at Jabulani.
Buffalo
Seen in big herds on the grasslands and around water, and as old bulls on their own. Read our buffalo guide.
Rhino
Both white and black rhino live here, under real pressure from poaching. SANParks estimated about 2,060 rhino in the Kruger in 2022 (about 1,850 white and 210 black), and government figures show 174 rhino poached in the Kruger in 2025, up from 88 in 2024. For their safety, guides never share where rhino are, and you should never post a rhino photo with its location. Read our rhino guide.
How to see all five
- Give it time: three or four nights with two game drives a day.
- Go with a guide: guides read tracks and alarm calls and hear what others have found.
- Mix the private reserves and the Kruger: the reserves for leopard and close sightings, the national park for its scale.
- Come in the dry season, May to October, when the bush is thin and animals gather at water.
