Where to see lions

In the Kruger National Park

The open grasslands around Satara are the classic lion country of the Kruger, and the tarred H7 from Orpen Gate runs about 47 km straight there. Lions follow the big herds of zebra, wildebeest and buffalo that graze these plains. Our Kruger day visit guide has the route, gate times and fees.

In the private reserves

The Timbavati, Klaserie and Balule share open boundaries with the Kruger, and Kapama and Thornybush are Big 5 reserves of their own. In private reserves, guides can usually leave the road to follow a pride within the reserve's rules, and fewer vehicles share each sighting. Our Evening Big 5 Safari goes out as the lions start to move.

When to see lions

  • Time of day: lions rest for most of the day. First light and the late afternoon into the evening are when they move, call and hunt.
  • Season: May to October, the dry season, when grass is short and animals gather at water. In summer, lions are easy to miss in long grass.

How to find them

  • Watch for vehicles stopped at a distance, and vultures on the trees or circling.
  • Listen: lions roar most at night and at dawn, and the sound carries for kilometres.
  • Look under shady trees and along drainage lines in the heat of the day.
  • Go with a guide: they read the tracks on the road and hear sightings from other guides.

White lions of the Timbavati

The Timbavati, next to Hoedspruit, is known for white lions: lions with a rare colour caused by a recessive gene, not albinos. They are born from time to time into wild prides in the area and are never guaranteed.

How many lions are there?

Lions are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. In the Kruger, the last park-wide survey (2005) estimated about 1,800. A 2024 survey in the north of the park found about 144 lions in one region, at lower densities than in the south, with snaring and poisoning among the threats.

Staying safe

Stay in the vehicle, keep your arms and head inside, and keep your voice down. On a guided drive, follow your guide's lead; in the Kruger, you may not leave your car outside the fenced camps and marked spots.

Plan your lion days

Pair a morning and an evening game drive with a Full Day Kruger Safari to Satara, or stay a night in the park at Satara Rest Camp. More on all five in the Big 5 guide.
