Hoedspruit sits between the Greater Kruger and the Drakensberg escarpment, so within an hour you have Big 5 reserves, the national park, one of the world's great canyons and the Panorama Route. These are the ten things we would do first, in the order we usually suggest them. Every one can be booked with us, and the times below are as the operators run them in 2026.

1. A Big 5 game drive

The reason most people come. Our shared drives go into a Big 5 reserve near Hoedspruit in an open vehicle with a qualified guide. The Morning Safari leaves at 05:00 and takes about 4.5 hours, with a coffee stop halfway. The Evening Big 5 Safari leaves at 15:30 and runs into the evening, when lion, leopard and hyena start to move, with a sundowner stop. Pickup from where you stay can be arranged, and both can be booked as a private vehicle.

2. A full day in the Kruger National Park

Orpen Gate is about an hour from town. Our Full Day Kruger Safari leaves Hoedspruit at 05:00 in an open safari vehicle and is back in the afternoon, about 10.5 hours in all, with the park's conservation fee paid at the gate. Our Kruger day visit guide has fees, gate times and routes if you would rather drive yourself.

3. The Panorama Route

A day up the escarpment: Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Lisbon and Berlin Falls and God's Window, with lunch at Harrie's Pancakes in Graskop. Our Panorama Route Day Tour leaves at 07:00 and takes about eight hours, with the entrance fees at every stop included.

4. A boat cruise in the Blyde River Canyon

The Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world, and the 90-minute Blyde River Canyon Boat Cruise takes you onto the dam at its foot, below the Three Rondavels and past the Kadishi Tufa waterfall. Hippo, crocodile and fish eagles are often seen. Cruises leave at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 from a jetty about 7 km from Swadini; you drive yourself there.

5. A hot air balloon flight

A sunrise balloon flight of about an hour over farmland and riverine forest along the Blyde River, about 15 km west of Hoedspruit, with the escarpment behind you. You meet 45 minutes before sunrise, and the flight is confirmed the afternoon before, because it depends on the wind and rain.

6. An elephant morning at Jabulani

Elephant Moments at Jabulani is 90 minutes with two or three elephants of the Jabulani herd and their carers on the Kapama Private Game Reserve: you hear each elephant's story and offer them snacks from behind a low partition. It starts at 06:30 (arrive by 06:00) and children from six can join.

7. Meet the conservation centres

Hoedspruit is home to two of the best-known wildlife centres in the country. The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre runs tours of about two hours, by appointment, to meet cheetah, wild dog, rhino and vultures. Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre cares for injured and orphaned animals and runs guided tours from Monday to Saturday. Our Wild About Animals package builds a stay around them.

8. A horseback safari

Ride out among giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and antelope on the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, with no engine noise. The one-hour Horseback Safari starts at 08:30 and suits riders with some experience and children from six; beginners cannot be taken.

9. A quad bike trail

Two one-hour trails: Buffaloland, a 3,000 hectare game farm where zebra, kudu and wildebeest line the route (riders 16 and up, closed Mondays and Tuesdays), and Franklyn Park, through riverine forest at the foot of Mariepskop (closed Mondays).

10. See it from the air

A microlight flight from the Hoedspruit civil airfield flies low over the Big 5 reserves, from ten minutes to an hour out to the Olifants River or the canyon. For the canyon in full, the helicopter flight over the Blyde River Canyon takes up to three passengers over the Kadishi waterfall, the Three Rondavels and Bourke's Luck Potholes.
