Hoedspruit is small, but what is around it is not. Within an hour or so you have the Kruger, a canyon among the largest in the world and some of the best-known private game reserves in Africa. These are the attractions we send people to, with visiting details checked on 5 October 2026.

The Kruger National Park
South Africa's oldest and biggest national park. From Hoedspruit the nearest gate, Orpen, is about 70 km away, roughly an hour's drive, which makes a full day in the park easy. Read our Kruger day visit guide for fees and gate times, or join our Full Day Kruger Safari.
The Blyde River Canyon and the Three Rondavels
The Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons on Earth and, unlike most, it is green: its slopes are covered in forest and bush. The Three Rondavels, three round-topped peaks that look like traditional huts, are its best-known view. See it from the viewpoint on the escarpment, from the water on the Blyde River Canyon Boat Cruise, or from the air on a helicopter flight.
The Panorama Route
The road along the top of the escarpment links God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, where the river has carved deep holes into the rock, and the Lisbon and Berlin Falls. It is a full day from Hoedspruit; our Panorama Route Day Tour includes the entrance fee at every stop.
Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre
On the R40 just outside town, HESC works with cheetah, rhino, wild dog, vultures and other threatened species, and runs a rhino rehabilitation project. Tours run daily at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, last about two hours, and are by appointment only.
Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre
Moholoholo takes in injured, poisoned and orphaned wild animals and returns them to the wild where it can. Its guided tours, which carry a fee, run from Monday to Saturday at 09:30 and 15:00, and on Sundays at 15:00 in school holidays and over long weekends.
Hoedspruit Reptile Centre
On the R527, the Hoedspruit Reptile Centre is open every day from 08:00 to 17:00. Walk round on your own or book a guided tour with a live snake demonstration; a good choice for children and for the hottest part of the day.
The private game reserves
The private reserves around Hoedspruit hold the Big 5. The Timbavati, Klaserie and Balule share open boundaries with the Kruger, so animals move freely between them and the park; Kapama and Thornybush are large reserves of their own. They are not open to day visitors in their own cars: you see them from a lodge or on a shared game drive. Browse game lodges if you would like to stay in one.
Closer to town
