The short answer

The African Fish Eagle in Kruger

The African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) is the unofficial sound of the African bushveld. Its long, ringing call carries across rivers and dams and is one of the first things first-time visitors learn to recognise. It is South Africa's national fish-eating raptor and a common bird of the Greater Kruger waterways.

How to identify it

Adults are unmistakable - white head, chest and tail; chestnut belly; black wings; yellow face and feet. Juveniles are mottled brown and take 4-5 years to reach adult plumage.

How it hunts

Fish Eagles hunt from a high snag along a river. They drop fast, plant their talons in the water, and lift a fish in a single strike. Larger fish are dragged ashore. They will also rob other birds and feed on carrion when fishing is poor.

Where to see it in the Greater Kruger

Along the perennial rivers of the central Kruger - Olifants, Sabie and Letaba - and on the dams of the private reserves around Hoedspruit. Often easiest to see early morning when they call most.
